In early summer (May and June) and fall (mid-September through October) weather can get quite cold. Even though mid summer days are quite warm, when the sun sets the nights become cool. Always bring a warm jacket or coat and a poncho or rain resistant jacket for the infrequent summer showers. For our most common weather we suggest at least one pair of long pants, a long sleeved shirt, shorts, a short-sleeved shirt, boots for riding and several pairs of sturdy socks. It is nice to have an additional lightweight pair of shoes or moccasins for around camp. A broad-brimmed hat is excellent protection against the sun. If your sleeping bag is light, bring an extra blanket for the cool nights. In late fall you may get some snow so dress accordingly. The average pack animal will carry 150 pounds (50 pounds per person). This will give you a guide in planning the number of pack animals you will need for your trip. Each person's requirements are different and our suggested camping supplies are equipment is only a guide. It is helpful to write out a complete day-to-day meal plan. In mid-summer or warm weather a large plastic tarp hung over a rope makes adequate rain shelter. The Forest Service requires you to have a shovel and water bucket in camp.
